Tracking AI/LLM Traffic in GA4
With AI search engines like ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude becoming mainstream in 2026, businesses are seeing a surge in traffic from these platforms. However, GA4 does not classify AI/LLM traffic by default, causing misattribution and data inaccuracies. I will be going through how I do it in my Google Analytics properties.
Why Updating Channel Groups Is Critical
If AI referral traffic is categorized as Direct or Organic, insights become skewed. Businesses lose visibility into real traffic sources, campaign performance and user behavior. Although having your brand served through GPTs may not eventually result to a click to your website, if a click happens, this is my approach.
How to Create an AI & LLM Traffic Channel in GA4
Follow these steps to update channel groups in GA4:
1. Go to Admin → Data Settings → Channel Groups.
2. Create a new custom channel group named ‘AI Search & LLM Traffic’.
3. Add match rules for: (you can use RegEx or any logic you prefer)
- chat.openai.com
- www.perplexity.ai
- gemini.google.com
- claude.ai
- x.ai
4. Save and publish your changes.
5. Monitor new traffic classification over several days to confirm accuracy.
